A taste of Hartlepool

Another new feature of this year's festival is "A Taste of Hartlepool", developed by the Tourism Team as part of the Hartlepool Restaurant Initiative. It comprises a series of events in which local restaurants work in partnership with Hartlepool College of Further Education to develop and enhance the selected menus.

One of the key events in which the project will be heavily involved is the Hartlepool Maritime Festival, which runs 4th-6th July of this year. A temporary new eating experience is to be created within a spectacular framed pavilion located in the Navigation Point car park. It will act as a fully functioning restaurant, staffed by the college's Catering students and organised with assistance from the participating businesses. It is a great opportunity for the students to gain hands-on experience within a working restaurant, as well as showcasing their talents to local employers.

The pavilion will function as an overflow restaurant to accommodate the thousands of visitors flocking to the town for the festival. The Tourism Team are currently in talks with leading food supplier 3663 to arrange provision of all supplies for the weekend's culinary delights.

The number of local eateries taking part in the project has now run into double figures and includes the Staincliffe Hotel and Ocean Restaurant. They will help to shape the menus for the events, which will be used as a valuable marketing platform on which to promote their businesses. Other local restaurants are encouraged to come on board and get involved in "A Taste of Hartlepool", by getting in touch with the Tourism Team.

The Maritime Festival takes place around Hartlepool Marina and Hartlepool Maritime Experience, and runs once every two years. Harland Deer comments: "Festival organisers aim to come up with something a little different each time and believe that the restaurant pavilion will certainly achieve this in the 2008 event. Other activities taking place include food demonstrations, cook-offs and a continental market, as well as music, street theatre, comedy and watersports.

An estimated 70,000 people from across the region are expected to attend the festival, which promises to be the perfect appetiser to the Tall Ships event taking place in 2010."
