Heugh Battery

Home > Things to See & Do > Heugh Battery

A unique site filled with history and intrigue. The only British gun battery to have fired its guns in anger during the First World War - come and explore a faithfully restored 19th century coastal defence battery.

The Heugh Gun Battery is situated on the Headland in Hartlepool. The First World War touched many lives but on 16th December 1914 Hartlepool suffered a bombardment which would be remembered by many over 90 years later.

The museum encourages people to understand war and conflict and the impact it has both on those at the Front but also those who are left behind at home. The venue is divided across three levels with the underground magazines, the parade ground and main museum with the Observation Point tower providing panoramic views of the North Sea and surrounding coast line.

Heugh Battery

The Heugh Battery is open throughout the year. It is open Thursday to Sunday inclusive and also Bank Holidays. Please note the Heugh Battery closes from 16th December and will reopen as usual in January.

Open: Thurs - Sun
