RSPB Saltholme

A beautiful nature reserve that is home to a variety of wildlife. From brightly-coloured butterflies and gorgeous orchids, to stately swans and raucous common terns, we promise you won't be disappointed.

Come and explore the breathtaking, state-of-the-art building with panoramic views of this huge wetland... A brilliant cafe - just follow your nose for freshly-brewed coffee, gooey cakes and mouthwatering meals... A great shop where you'll be able to spend a bit of pocket money or splash the cash... Three architect-designed hides to get you closer to the oodles of wildlife that call this place home, including the striking Wildlife Watchpoint which overlooks one of our busiest pools.

Opening Times:

Saltholme is open every day except Christmas Day. From 1 April to 30 September, we're open from 10 am to 5 pm, and from 1 October to 31 March, 10 am to 4 pm.

Entry Charges:

£3 per car - but RSPB members get in free. Come by bike, public transport or on two feet and it won't cost you a penny - no matter how long you stay.

How to get there:

The nearest bus stop is outside the entrance to Saltholme, on the Seaton Carew Road. The Number 1 stops here and is run by Stagecoach in Hartlepool.

By road: Saltholme is 10 minutes from the A19; turn east off the A19 north of Stockton along the A689. After half a mile, take the A1185; in 4 miles join the A178 at a mini roundabout and take the third exit. The reserve entrance is 250 metres on the right-hand side. From Middlesbrough centre, the site can be accessed via the Transporter Bridge (every 15 minutes weekdays 7 am-8 pm, Saturday 11 am-5.50 pm, Sunday 2 pm- 5.30 pm, cost £1.20 each way). Saltholme is 1.5 miles from the bridge along the A178 north from Port Clarence.
