PSS Wingfield Castle

Built in Hartlepool by William Gray & Co. for the London and North Eastern Railway as a passenger and vehicle ferry over the Humber estuary between Hull and New Holland.

'Wingfield Castle' had a busy life. She worked hard and gave her best. Having served well she was put aside and labelled as obsolete and antiquated. Her revitalisation by an imaginative group of skilled workers has been one of the first steps in the road to the reconstruction of the civic pride of Hartlepool. In many ways 'Wingfield Castle' reflects the history of the town of Hartlepool. Through prosperity and recession Hartlepool has carried on and through the efforts and vision of her people a bright future for all who live, work and play here is assured.



Entry is free, and visitors can tour all parts of the ship including the bridge and the boiler room - you'll never complain about your job again when you see where the stokers worked! The forward passenger section has been converted into a very fine coffee shop.
