Gallery of images – building the nuclear power station

Building Hartlepool nuclear power station is a collection of over a hundred images taken during the construction of the Reactor Hall Building and the construction of the two pre-stressed concrete Pressure Vessels which contain the reactors and boilers.
The images date from summer 1969 - summer 1972
Building of the power station started in 1969 and first generated power in 1983. Expected to be decommissioned from 2009 – 2014, the power station currently provides electricity for over 3% of the UK. Powered by two 1575 MWTh advanced gas reactors and two 660 MW generators.
Images taken by Andrew Payne. Andrew Payne was one of several civil engineers who worked on the construction of the Reactor Hall Building and on the construction of the two pre-stressed concrete Pressure Vessels which contain the reactors and boilers.
Andrew Payne left the site to work in the Middle-East in June 1972. Construction of the Pressure Vessels continued for several more years.
