The Heugh Gun Battery

The Heugh (pronounced "Yuff") Gun Battery is a site of great significance. As a surviving 19th century coastal battery, complete with WW1 and WW2 modifications, it stands as a memorial to those lost during the great war.

The battery was the location of the only shore-to-ship combat in the whole of the UK during the Great War and home to the first person to die on British shores. It is a place that should stimulate the hearts as well as the minds of all who visit.

Heugh Battery Restoration

The Heugh Battery has seen better days, but a group of local volunteers are managing to restore it to its former war-time glory

History of the Heugh Battery

Heugh Battery and its sister sites were first conceived in the wake of the Napoleonic Wars to protect the important port and ship building centre of Hartlepool from attack by sea.
