Local school shows visitors the way to Tall Ships

AFTER 3 months of hard work, art and design students at St Hild’s School have unveiled their artistic contribution to the Tall Ships Races Hartlepool-2010.

A team of Y10 students at the school each created an individual design as part of their BTec vocational studies.

Geoffrey Crannage, subject leader for Art and Design at St Hild’s said: “The students had a brilliant time researching the Tall Ships Races, and as a team they decided to produce the designs based on a child’s perspective, enhancing the feel of a family-friendly event.”

After being mounted onto MDF boards, the 12 laminated designs will guide visitors from the principal Park and Walk site at Oaksway Industrial Estate to Cleveland Road, where official Tall Ships signage will take over directing visitors to the Tall Ships Village site.

Mark Cant, a member of the Tall Ships project team, said: “The Tall Ships Races Hartlepool 2010 provides a fantastic opportunity for the local community to participate, and St Hild’s rose to the challenge.”

“We hope the designs will not only direct visitors to the event, but show the effort that has been made by St Hild’s School to make the Tall Ships Races a worthy and memorable experience.”

Hartlepool will welcome around 70 vessels and up to one million visitors when it hosts The Tall Ships Races 2010 in August this year.  Hartlepool Borough Council has teamed up with PD Ports and Hartlepool Marina to organise the event.

The fleet will provide a magnificent spectacle between 7 and 10 August 2010 at the end of The Tall Ships Races. The vessels will have sailed from Kristiansand in Norway in the second and final leg of the race.

The Tall Ships Official Event guide, produced by Living North, is now on sale. Its is available from Hartlepool’s Maritime Experience, the Tourist Information Centre and Art Gallery in Church Street, and from Hartlepool Borough Council’s Civic Centre reception.

The booklet costs £4.00, but visitors who book car parking spaces ahead of the event will be able to buy it at the discounted rate of £2.00. Bookings for park and ride, blue badge holders and coaches can be made through the Tall Ships website, or by phone. The guide can also be purchased through the online shop on the Tall Ships website.
