Aluminio Roots - Friday 25th July

Upbeat, contagious & soulful songs of love, faith & justice from one of the major reggae names from Brazil on his second international tour.

Rising to fame via his roots reggae movement in the Pelourinho, of Salvadour, Aluminio Roots is now one of the biggest names in reggae in Bahia - the heartland of Brazilian music and home to the biggest carnival on Earth.

2007 saw his first European tour, his tropicalia sound a success at summer festivals:

“Aluminio Roots brought the house down at two festivals, headlining the Summer Tyne Festival at Sage Gateshead on Sunday, after also headlining on Saturday at the Mouth of the Tyne Festival in South Shields” (Hartlepool Mail, England – 23/07/07)

ALUMÍNIO (Nivaldo Ferreira da Silva), has developed as musician, singer, songwriter and spiritual leader, in the face of all adversity. Since adolescence amid the drums of Pelourinho, rhythms already danced around him, but the root that was planted was the Ethiopian Nyambingh:

1992 - was a founding member of the group BEM AVENTURADOS (The Blessèd), as drummer – percussionist, performing gigs in various cities of Bahia.

1999 - began song-writing and singing, taking on leadership of Cultura em Movimento (Culture in Movement) in the Rocinha of Pelourinho, which leapt forward, with local, national and international recognition, formalisation of cultural activities, building the stage and promoting various other reggae, rap and hip-hop bands.

2002 - launched his own work, CARRUAGEM DE FOGO (Chariot of Fire). With a significant audience from all tribes, the media arrived in the Rocinha. It was transformed from ghetto to an important cultural point and reference of Rastafarian philosophy. Alumínio became renowned in the national reggae scenario and the Rocinha became the “Reggae Channel of Bahia”.

2003 – first professional recording – “Rocinha – 22 de setembro” seeks the “future of the nation”, remembering the attempt at massacre of the cultural movement by the authorities, with lyrics quoted in the UN national report on “Right to Housing”, presented to the President of Brazil. The collection brings favourite songs such as: Princesa (Princess), Agradecimentos de Louvor (Thanks of Praise), Fiscalização (Fiscalisation), Torre de Babel (Babel´s Tower) e Doce Mel (Sweet Honey).

2005 - highlights include his “Every Day is Reggae Day” (lead event in Bahia on World Reggae Day) and representation at the 1st National Conference on Culture in Brasília, with song recital in Parliament.
