DUE to popular demand, more sessions are being organised to introduce people in  Hartlepool to the delights of Nordic Walking.

The Scandinavian fitness technique uses walking poles and can burn off up to 47% more calories than normal walking.

It dates from the 1930s when cross-country skiers in Finland started to use ski poles during their out-of-season training when there was no snow and they found it an excellent way of toning both their upper and lower body muscles. It is also very good exercise for the heart and lungs.

It’s proving so popular that Hartlepool Council’s Sports Development Team has organised two more courses:

  • Nordic Walking for ages 50 and over -  On Tuesday evenings from 6.30pm to 7.30pm for six weeks starting on 1 November – meet at Newburn Car Park in Seaton Carew. The course costs a total of £12 and is run in partnership with Age UK.

  • Nordic Walking for all ages -  On Thursday evenings from 5.30pm to 6.30pm for six weeks starting on 3 November – meet at Newburn Car Park in Seaton Carew. The course costs a total of £12.

Advance booking is essential and places are allocated on a first-come-first-served basis.

Rachael Pringle, the Council’s Sports Development Officer, said: “People like the fact that Nordic Walking is a bit different, is easy to learn and doesn’t require expensive clothing or equipment.

“The walking poles help propel you along at a faster pace than normal walking without you feeling the effort. It’s great exercise for people of different ages.”

For more information or to book a place on the above courses, please contact Rachael Pringle on 01429 284414 or e-mail rachael.pringle@hartlepool.gov.uk
