Buttonhook Society Annual Exhibition / AGM

Buttonhooks have been around from at least 1550. The earliest reference to a buttonhook is found in Randle Cotgrave?s English/French Dictionary of 1611: ?Boutonneur: an instrument wherewith buttons are pulled through their o?er straight holes.? This definition has never been bettered. Until the 1880?s when ladies began to wear button boots, most of the buttonhooks before then were very masculine, as these would have been used by the Huntin? Shootin? and Fishin? men and the military. They would have been used on gaiters, riding boots and buff jerkins. With the demise of armour, soldiers turned to buff coats made of Ox hide to ward off blows, the buff hide being extremely tough and difficult to button. This exhibition covers several periods of buttonhook history from 1700 to the present day. www.thebuttonhooksociety.com Tel.(01429) 860077 for more details.
